This is a little bit of a different blog post. I usually just post photography-related things, but I also love to share my heart, so let’s see how it goes. Let me know if you’d like to read more of this type of blog or if I should just stick to photography.
What voice are you listening to during this quarantine?
It has been one month since Spring Break: That’s when things really started to change, when the news of Coronavirus in the U.S. and San Antonio really started striking a worry in us all.
I heard Dave Ramsey say this: There are two types of people during a crisis. One who’s more laid back, not as worried, and looks on the bright side. Then there’s the one who worries a bit more, prepares, plans, scrambles, etc. I am usually the planner, but since we were prepared for a scarce season — with me being out of work and on maternity leave — I was the first type of person. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been fearful.
The Voice of Fear
Fear: This is a word I’ve actually been hearing since before the outbreak here.
My friend, Melodie, shared a short Bible study on this word during spring break, and it has really stuck with me. She discussed a few types of fear, but here are the ones I think pertain to this quarantine:
- Fear of the unknown (What is this virus?, Will I get sick?, Will there be a vaccine?, When will this end?)
- Fear of the future (I lost my job, now what?, How are we going to make it financially? When will this lockdown end?, Will school resume?, Will the market crash?)
- Fear of man (What do others think of me?, I can’t go out because other people will bash me, Will the government handle this correctly?)
Fear’s voice is loud. Fear can come from two places: the enemy or our own thoughts.
The Voice of God
But what does God say about fear? “For God will never give you the spirit of fear, but the Holy Spirit who gives you mighty power, love, and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7
- Power comes from the Holy Spirit to overcome the situation in front of you.
- Love comes from God, and it covers us.
- Self-control or a sound mind comes from God’s Word so we can replace worries with truth.
To help me listen to God’s voice over fear’s voice, I have been trying to be consistent in doing a morning devotional with Simple Morning Lists: A Morning Practice of Letting Go, Getting Grateful, and Reminding Yourself Where You’re Headed.
I’ve also been doing Christian Yoga by Caroline Williams before the sun even comes up on a few days of the week.
And last, but not least, I have been spending a lot of time with God. My main questions to Him are:
- What do you want me to learn during this season?
- What are you saying in and through this situation?
- What do I need to change or improve in my life?
And I just try to listen more intently to God through His word, worship music, prayer, and even through my husband and Ethan.
